Access RestrictionsWhile the three towers have been getting steadily more visible out in the Forth in recent months, a lot of the major work going on at the southern approach viaduct has been largely hidden from view. This is because most of the approach roads are in deep cutting to minimise any visual impact for the local community.
However, you can’t keep a bridge of this scale hidden forever! The southern approach viaduct – which will eventually weigh 6,000 tonnes - is being gradually launched out over the piers towards the Forth. The deck sections which will eventually become the northbound carriageway have now reached 200m since the first launch in December 2013. They are now well past pier “S7” and over Society Road in South Queensferry.
Transport Minister Keith Brown recently visited the progress being made. Read Transport Scotland’s news release and watch a video below of his visit including interviews with Mr Brown and Transport Scotland’s Project Director David Climie.
A final bonus for bridge enthusiasts, you can also see the full, fascinating time-lapse footage of the launch here.
