The Capay Organic farm, begun in 1976 by Kathleen Barsotti and her husband Martin Barnes, was one of the first organic farms in California, and furthermore, in the nation. The farm came into existence before there was even a USDA standard for organic, and before most people understood what the phrase “organic farming” meant.
In efforts to bring this exceptional produce to the local public, Martin, along with approximately 10 others, founded the original Davis Farmers’ Market, an enterprise highly successful to this day. Not only did the couple play a key role in introducing and popularizing organic produce locally but after their divorce, Kathleen went on to further her and Martin’s innovative achievements by offering yet another novel service. In 1992 she expanded the Capay Organic farm to include Farm Fresh to You, a service that delivers produce directly to your doorstep. Although similar services are currently offered elsewhere, Farm Fresh to You continues to stand out as uniquely customer oriented and with exceptionally fresh and organic produce, living up to the long and reputable quality for which Capay Organic is known.
