The California Raptor Center (CRC) will hold its fall open house on Saturday, Nov. 15, 9 a.m. – 2 p.m. Admission is free.
The public is invited to join the hour-long “Hawk Walk,” starting at the CRC gate at 8 a.m. Binoculars are suggested.
The CRC cares for injured raptors (eagles, hawks, vultures and owls), and rehabilitates and releases them back to the wild whenever possible. Birds that cannot be released are trained to take part in the CRC’s education program.
Special presentations at 10 a.m. and noon will demonstrate features of raptor biology and ecology, and visitors will be able to see many non-releasable raptors housed in display cages, as well as birds out on the glove (including Mikey, the Red Shouldered Hawk featured on Huell Howser’s California’s Gold television program). The CRC’s on-site museum will also be open.
To get to CRC, take the UC Davis exit from Interstate 80 and turn south on Old David Road away from the main campus. Cross the railroad tracks and keep going until there is a rise in the road leading up to the Putah Creek Bridge. At the side of the rise, there is a low-profile blue and gold California Raptor Center sign with a diagonal arrow pointing to the left. Do not cross the bridge, but instead turn left onto the paved levee road and follow it for one block until it dips down off the levee. Turn right into the CRC parking lot. (Parking is free).
For more information on CRC and a location map, visit its Web site at www.vetmed.ucdavis.edu/ars/raptor.htm
