August Events
by Laura Cole-Rowe

August is a kick-back month for Davis – the City Council goes on hiatus, and many of us take our long-deserved vacations and get ready for the start of school at the end of the month. But if you are staying locally, there are several things to do in town, including attending events featuring art, dance, science, music and eating local food. So if you’re not traveling, take in some local culture.

Devi: an Odissi Indian dance troupe, featuring Guru Jyoti Rout, Jyoti Kala Mandir soloists and other group dancers, will be performing at the theater at Davis High School, 315 W. 14th Street, Davis on Saturday, Aug. 9, 7 p.m.

An ensemble of world-renowned Odissi musicians will accompany the dance troupe. Guru Rout is most noted for her ability to demonstrate and transmit emotions, as well as her innovative choreography. Original music and choreography is inspired by Devi Puja in an attempt to bring the sounds, rituals and experience of ancient goddess worship to a contemporary audience.

Tickets are $12-$18. For more information, visit www.jyotikalamandir.org, or call (510) 486-9851.
